A client crumbles in front of you every time that feeling is activated.

A wife tells you her husband will never change and he'll never come to your office.

A couple yells at each other across your office and you find yourself starting to feel hopeless with them.

Three scenarios requiring you to juggle three different modalities, each with its own framework, language, and assumptions to hold in your head while the one in front of you is looking to you for help.

ASR gives you one framework to work from regardless of the issue before you.

About ASR and this training

Attuned Systemic Repair is an integrative modality that works individually and relationally, cognitively and emotionally. It draws together attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, emotion theory, and core principles found separately across other modalities into a single, cohesive, working framework.

This training is experiential.

Level 1 Training walks you experientially through each part so you leave knowing what you're doing. You will not sit through a lecture and then go home to figure out how to use it. This training walks you through how to use ASR piece by piece, each part building on what came before. By the end of Level 1  you'll know what you are doing and why it works.

Module 1 & 2 can be purchased separately. Module 1 is a prerequisite for Module 2.

Level 1 is the entry point to ASR certification

Both modules are required. Certification is competency-based rather than hour-based. Independent and group coaching and supervision are available after Level 1 training is complete. Coaching and supervision are independently contracted with coaches and supervisors. 3 submitted videos that meet the ASR Therapist Fidelity Scale threshold are required for certification at this time.

“I am so grateful for a model that helps me across all presenting issues. It gets to the root of the issue rather than being stuck in endless symptom management.”

Jordanne C., LMFT

Module 1 · October 23 & 24

Attuning and Engaging

Over two days you'll learn how ASR defines the problem — and then you'll practice working it.

You'll learn what holds a client's distress and how to access it more directly and more securely. You'll learn to attune to what a client is feeling before they have words for it, and to tell where a client's Self ends and the feeling begins.

You'll build a conceptualization of the client in front of you and of the people in their life who will never walk through your door. You'll learn to identify and predict the unique patterns of behavior distress creates in individuals and in relationships. You'll practice engaging the part of a client that carries their distress rather than working around it.

You'll leave knowing what underlying distress is asking for, and what actually soothes and heals it.

Included: 90-minute group coaching

Between the modules you'll join a 90-minute session led by a trained ASR coach, in groups of three to four. Bring a case. Get live consultation on how your practice of ASR is going. Arrive at Module 2 with confidence for the rest of the model.

Module 2 · December 4 & 5

Blocks and Bridges

Module 1 is a prerequisite for Module 2.

Module 1 taught you to work with what's happening inside a client.

Module 2 is what you do with everything outside your office — and what to do when you get blocked from where change really needs to happen.

We start where relationships actually change. You'll learn to construct empathy rather than wait for it — helping a client feel what another person carries, not just understand it. From there you'll design specific responses aimed at what that person's feeling actually needs, secure a client so they can hold their own distress while they engage relational distress, and pace disclosure to what both people can bear. When the relationship ruptures, and it will, you'll learn to sequence the repair and build a new shared story that keeps it from becoming more evidence for the old one.

Then we turn to addressing blocks in therapy. Blocks come in two forms: a feeling too intense to get close to, and a story that stands in the way. You'll learn to work at the edge of distress, to adapt blocking narratives without arguing with them, and why the goal is a truer truth rather than a correct one.

You'll learn how to work when only one partner is in the room, and what changes when both are.

By the close of Module 2, you'll have practiced the entire model.

“I found ASR has not just changed the way I do therapy, but it has changed me as a therapist.”

James R., MCMHC

Presenter

Aron Strong, LMFT, is the creator of Attuned Systemic Repair (ASR), an integrative modality synthesizing attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, and emotion theory within a systemic frame — one framework that adapts across individual, couple, and family work rather than requiring clinicians to switch models between them. An AAMFT Approved Supervisor, he is the founder of Pathways Counseling in Middle Tennessee, where he has trained and supervised every clinician on staff, and co-founder of inRelationship, an NBCC-approved continuing education provider (ACEP No. 7745). ASR's fidelity measure, the ASR Therapist Fidelity Scale, was developed in collaboration with Dr. Jennifer VanBoxel of The Family Institute at Northwestern University, where outcome research on the model is in development. Aron co-hosts The Christian Therapist Podcast and spent sixteen years in pastoral ministry before entering clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

Module 1: Attuning and Engaging

Participants will be able to:

  1. Differentiate cognitive from affective attunement and demonstrate affective attunement in a live practice dyad.
  2. Identify the five aspects of a felt experience — somatic, emotional, narrative, need and longing, and behavioral — in a client presentation.
  3. Differentiate feelings, emotions, and constructed meanings in client language.
  4. Apply the Follow the Feeling principle to identify which distressed feeling to prioritize in a given moment.
  5. Formulate a conceptualization of a relational other who is not present, using client-reported data rather than client interpretation.
  6. Predict the interactional sequence likely to occur between two conceptualized individuals under specified conditions.
  7. Demonstrate a feeling engagement sequence differentiating a client's Self from a distressed feeling.
  8. Apply the developmental sequence of self-awareness, self-compassion, self-responsibility, and self-control to a client's felt distress.

Module 2: Blocks and Bridges

Participants will be able to:

  1. Formulate a conceptualization of a relational other who is not present in session, using client-reported data rather than client interpretation.
  2. Predict the interactional sequence two conceptualized individuals are likely to produce and identify what each behavior is attempting to solve.
  3. Demonstrate constructing empathy in a client for a relational other.
  4. Design a behavioral response aimed at the specific attachment need of another person in the client's system, sized to the client's current capacity.
  5. Navigate both parties' edge of tolerance for vulnerable disclosure and sequence interventions to the lesser capacity.
  6. Apply a repair sequence following relational rupture, including construction of a shared narrative of the event.
  7. Demonstrate a reverse enactment when a receiving partner is unable to connect empathically.
  8. Differentiate a blocking narrative from a feeling too intense to approach, and apply integrating exceptions, expanding knowledge, or empathetic contradictions accordingly.
